Have you ever had a dream?  If you’re human I’m sure the answer is yes.  My dream has always been to be a mom, and have endless time to craft!  Well I am now a mom but I still haven’t accomplished the endless crafting time.  That’s alright, now my dream has shifted to supporting my little Zebra, and his dreams in life, with my crafting.

While I have my shop to sell my handmade items, I also want to reach out to my fellow makers!  This is my very first time writing a pattern.  I live in Tempe, AZ so our coldest weather is not that cold.  I wanted a light weight cowl that can keep me warm without overheating.  Enter the Gibby Cowl, named after my little zebra Gilbert.  It’s an open stitch that allows airflow and is perfect for that crisp but not frozen fall weather I have heard so much about.  It’s also great for us here in the Phoenix area who get chilly when its below 70 degrees.  As a hockey mom this is perfect for time at the rink too!

I think this is a good intermediate beginner pattern, you just need to know how to chain, double crochet, slip stitch and work in the back bump of a chain.  Pattern is written in US terminology.

I really hope you enjoy and if you make this please share your pictures with me.  I’m on Instagram and Facebook as Zebra Mom Handmade.

The pattern is free, here on my blog, but if you prefer a printable format, or you just wish to support a fellow maker, you can purchase the PDF HERE for a small fee. Thank you!

The Gibby Cowl
By Bethany Pattie

Supplies:

6mm hook
Worsted weight (size 4) yarn in 2 colors
Color A Less than 80 yards
Color B Less than 150 yards
Scissors
Needle to weave in ends

I used Impeccable by Loops and Threads in colors Thunder, Gold, and Kelly Green. Both cowls were made with 1 skein of each color with a lot of Gold and Kelly left over. This is a great project for markets as you can get 2-3 cowls from 1 ball of each color!

Gauge:

5 Vs = 4in
height you can go to desired height.

Measurements:

Double loop / single loop
48.5in x 7 in / 28in x 8in

Double Loop and Single Loop are worked the same except for the starting chain length. You can make this as long or short as you want just chain a multiple of 3 – 1.

You can also make the color sections as big or small as you want. The pictured cowls are:

Gold/Grey = 4 rows Gold / 8 rows Grey (double Loop)
Green/Grey = 4 rows Green / 10 rows Grey (single loop)
Mint / Grey = 8 rows in each color (yarn is discontinued)

Abbreviations in US terminology:

CH = chain
DC = double crochet
SLST = slip stitch
V stitch = DC, CH 1, DC in same space
back loop = the back loop of starting chain
CH 4 at start is equivalent to DC CH1

Color A:

Start: CH 179 / 89 SLST to first CH in back loop-be careful not to twist the chain!

Row 1: CH 4 and DC in same CH. {skip 2 CH V stitch in 3rd CH back loop} repeat {} until 2 chains left, skip last 2 CH and SLST to 3rd CH of CH 4 at start. SLST to CH 1 space of that V.    (60Vs / 30Vs)

Row 2: CH 4, DC in CH 1 space of V from previous row. V stitch in the CH 1 space of each V around. Join to 3rd CH of CH 4 at start. SLST into CH 1 space.

Rows 3-4: repeat row 2. Fasten Off.

Color B:

you will work your V’s in the opposite direction of the V’s of color A.

Row 1: working on the bottom side of starting chain join to bottom of V stitch of starting round in color A. CH 4 and DC in that CH. V stitch in bottom of each V around. SLST to 3rd CH of CH4 at start. SLST to CH 1 space.

Row 2: CH 4 and DC in CH 1 space. V stitch in CH 1 space of each V around. SLST to 3rd CH of CH 4 at the start. SLST into CH 1 space.

Rows 3-8/10: repeat row 2. Fasten off.

Weave in ends and enjoy!
